"Bokeh" is a term in photography used to describe point lights and bright objects that are thrown out of focus in the background of a photograph. Here is an excellent example:
The shape of the bokeh is determined by your camera's aperture (some lenses have less blades and create hexagon or even pentagon shaped bokeh). Well, things get interesting when you fake a custom shaped aperture by covering your lens with black paper with a cutout in the front.
